St George’s shortlisted for the Kent Children’s Charity of the Year Award!
We are absolutely thrilled to have been shortlisted for the Children’s Charity of the Year Award, by Kent Charity Awards.
“Recognising those who make the lives of others better”
The 2024 Kent Charity Awards finalists were announced in June 2024, showcasing the exceptional work of charities and individuals in Kent. Over 70 charities entered the Awards, with more than 40 Trustees and Volunteers being nominated.
The judges agreed that this was a tough field of entries to judge but, after much consideration and deliberation, the organisers announced us as well-deserved finalists, alongside 3 brilliant children’s charities. See the finalists here.
The 2024 Kent Charity Awards finalists represent a diverse and dedicated group of charities and individuals committed to making a positive impact on the lives of others. These awards not only celebrate their remarkable achievements but also highlight the incredible work that is happening in Kent within the charity sector.
St George’s Positive Impact on Children and Their Families
St George’s operate our entire childcare setting as a charity, this means any surplus created from childcare fees is re-invested into providing outstanding care at our setting. For example, we invest in play equipment and learning resources for the children, we spend money maintaining our well-loved, converted Victorian building and large garden, and we provide a variety of extra-curricular sessions and trips out for our children.
Our subsidised childcare places are funded via our schedule of fundraising activities carried out throughout the year; including applying for relevant grants, and running events such as Quiz Nights, Summer and Christmas Fairs.
Last year we supported 17 families with subsidised childcare sessions. Understandably, it is difficult for families to permit us to share their private circumstances. We work closely with social services, health visitors and the women’s refuge to support children who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford nursery education. By relieving the financial burden of childcare, we have enabled parents to seek the help they need to get their lives back on track, whether it’s taking on more work to earn extra money for the family, or attending medical appointments or caring for siblings / relatives with additional health needs. Last year, we supported a single mother who was facing mental health challenges, and was referred to us by Home-Start. During the hours her daughter was in our care, she had respite to concentrate on her mental health needs, to attend counselling, and learnt to manage her illness.
About the Kent Charity Awards
The aim of these awards is to showcase the hard work and perseverance that charities undertake to make the lives of others better. There are currently no similar awards in the county and the Kent Charity Awards have become an important date in the third sector diaries. The charity awards are open to both small and large charities whether a branch of a national charity or a small community-based charity.
We’re so proud to have been shortlisted for this sought-after Award, it’s an honour to be listed alongside the three other brilliant charities in our category, and we extend a huge congratulations to the winners of the children’s charity category, We Are Beams.
