St George’s Charity

St George’s is the only nursery in Tunbridge Wells that offers subsidised childcare places to families in need. It means we can support vulnerable children and parents who need time and space to get back on their feet. We help families who are in crisis due to domestic violence, mental health issues, physical illness and financial hardship.

In 2024 we were shortlisted for the Children’s Charity of the Year Award, by the Kent Charity Awards, for our positive impact on children locally.

Who we support

Through our Subsidised Places Scheme, we support families who may be facing a number of challenges. For example:

  • families living in temporary accommodation
  • families in receipt of income-related benefits, annual household income of £16,190 or less, or are struggling financially
  • parent / guardian out of work, seeking employment or permanently / temporarily unable to work
  • parent / guardian completing a training course or in full-time education
  • child has a statement of special educational needs (SEN) or education, health and care plan
  • child or parent/guardian receiving Disability Living Allowance
  • family member with long-term, limiting physical health condition
  • family member with long-term, limiting mental health condition
  • families with one parent/guardian in prison
  • single parent families
  • families with 3 children or more
  • families from a minority ethnic group
  • families experiencing a sudden change in circumstances and are in need of childcare support for a temporary time

We take referrals from social workers, health visitors, women’s refuge, Family Hubs, doctors surgeries and other local support services.

We also welcome self-referrals, so please talk to us if you feel you, or someone you know, could benefit from our subsidised places. You can access our application form here, or chat to us first.

Places are allocated on a case by case basis, in discussion with families, and are dependent on availability.

Reach out to us

If you’re going through a difficult time and feel your family could benefit from our subsidised childcare sessions, or you know a family who could benefit, please talk to one of our Childcare Managers: email us, call 01892 543982, or drop into reception and ask for a confidential chat with a Childcare Manager.

We can only provide this vital service thanks to generous donations and the support of volunteers and local businesses.

All of our profits go back into the nursery and help us to improve it for the benefit of all our children – for example for new equipment and improvements to the building and garden. We raise money through our summer and Christmas fairs, coffee mornings and sports days.

There are lots of ways you can support St George’s. You can make a donation, organise your own fundraising event or volunteer
