Volunteer with us

Our volunteers play such an important role; supporting our fundraising events, spreading the word about our charity and helping out with DIY and admin support.

Volunteering at St George’s is a great way to boost your skills, meet new people and make a real difference to a small charity. Whether you have a few hours to spare or can commit to regular support, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch with us by email or call 01892 543982.

Now Recruiting: Story Time Readers!

Could you volunteer to come in and read books with our pre-schoolers?

We’re looking to recruit a team of Story Time Readers to come in regularly and read with our children aged 2.5 to 5 years old. It is widely known that reading to children and instilling a love of books and stories in children is one of the best ways we can prepare preschool-age children to start school. We’d like to make reading extra special for the children once per week here, by having enthusiastic volunteer ‘Story Time Readers’ come in and read with them.

Story Time Readers come in to read a book to a small group of children and then do an associated activity with them (it could be as simple as doing some colouring of a character from the book, or it may be a game or a craft activity).

We can be flexible on how often you can come in – just let us know your preferences. Ideally we will have a team of volunteers which switch in and out every other week, in order to maintain consistency for the children, without the need for volunteers committing to us every week.

A DBS check will be performed for all of our regular volunteers following a trial session in which you come in to our setting and see if you like the role and would like to take it up on a permanent basis.

Please don’t hesitate to email Amy to express your interest, or find out more.

Help us make reading magical for the children!

Fundraising Events Volunteer Case study: Carolyn

“There’s so much laughter”

Carolyn has been volunteering for St George’s for over 20 years.

“It all started when my oldest daughter got involved with the Mayor’s Christmas Toy Appeal. I helped wrap presents, then I helped at the Christmas Fair, then the Summer Fair and here we are 25 years later!

I really like the happy atmosphere at St George’s and meeting the wonderful staff. It’s an amazing place. Over the years I’ve met parents who tell me that they simply don’t know what they’d have done without help from the nursery.

It’s a privilege to be involved, even in a small way. Besides that, we have a great time – there’s so much laughter! I hope I can continue helping St George’s provide care for children who otherwise might not have such a happy start to life, for many years to come. I’d recommend volunteering here to everyone.
